The history of handball in Kharkiv stretches back more than a century. Kharkiv was one of the cities where the sport began to develop on Ukrainian territory in the early 20th century.
According to the Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine, the history of handball in Kharkiv can be traced back to 1909. That year, Eduard Mali, an instructor at the Kharkiv Sokol Gymnastics Society, introduced handball as part of physical training. He later developed and published rules for the game.
The First Teams and Matches
In 1914, a men's handball match took place at the Handballist sports ground in Kharkiv, featuring the Sokol team and a team of local gymnasium students.
It is one of the earliest documented episodes in the history of handball in Kharkiv and illustrates how quickly the new sport was gaining popularity in the city.
Within just a few years, enough teams had been formed to establish an organized city competition.
21 Teams by 1916
A major milestone came in 1916, when a handball league was established in Kharkiv with 21 teams.
The league organized competitions involving teams such as Handballist, the Society of Sports Enthusiasts, Shturm and others.
For the early 20th century, having 21 organized teams demonstrated just how rapidly handball had developed in Kharkiv.
Kharkiv Becomes One of Ukraine's Handball Centers
The next important chapter came in 1923, when the Kharkiv Handball League approved rules developed by V. Vatsek and organized the first official citywide handball competitions.
The sport continued to grow rapidly.
Between 1926 and 1928, the Kharkiv championship featured as many as 142 teams, including 41 women's teams. This made Kharkiv one of the most important centers of handball development in Ukraine.
Kharkiv — Ukraine's First Champion
Another historic milestone came in 1927, when the first Ukrainian handball championship was held with approximately 70 men's and women's teams taking part.
Both the men's and women's competitions were won by teams from Kharkiv.
It was another confirmation of the city's leading role in the early development of Ukrainian handball.
More Than a Century of Handball Tradition
Kharkiv's handball tradition began long before the emergence of today's professional clubs.
From the first handball activities in 1909, through the establishment of a 21-team league in 1916, to victories in the first Ukrainian championship, Kharkiv played an important role in shaping the history of Ukrainian handball.
Today, HC Kharkiv continues a sporting tradition that began in the city more than a century ago.
